Description: This course explores the genre collectively termed “children’s literature.” As we will see, what we commonly refer to or mean by children’s literature is an incredibly broad and diverse field of writing encompassing everything from mo‘olelo to fairy tales to picture books to young adult novels, to name but a few narrative types that fall under this category. That said, this course will investigate definitions and conceptions of children’s literature (how we define “children,” the ostensible audience of this literary form), as well as the purposes and characteristics of writing in this field. We will also discuss the related issue of censorship and book bans—both historical and current—and whether these are in/appropriate and/or un/necessary, and what and whose values these practices seek to reify and/or marginalize. Major texts to include: Malia Collins’s Pele and Poli‘ahu: A Tale of Fire and Ice, a children’s adaptation of Kanaka Maoli mo‘olelo about the rivalry between Pele, goddess of fire, and Poli‘ahu, goddess of snow; fairy tales from around the world including “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Snow White,” “Cinderella,” and “The Little Mermaid,” as well as Pidgin English retellings of these and other stories by local comedian Kent Bowman; poems by Shel Silverstein; Norman Juster’s, The Phantom Tollbooth, a humorous novel exploring the odd and sometimes contradictory conventions of grownups; S.E. They suggest that “Some cognitive scientists have ... proposed that anticipating possible futures is fundamentally what consciousness is for--the brain as a probability matrix or What-If Machine.” Borrowing from this concept-- “imagining otherwise” or asking and reading text with the What-Ifs in mind--this English literature course will delve into Black/African American, Native, and Indigenous literature that challenges the idea of American cultural normativity. Speculative aesthetics permits conversations on connection and knowledge, Black and Indigenous literature, and mobilizes the reader to explore and overturn the negative tropes that are often found in the genres of horror and speculative fiction in relation to Black and Indigenous peoples (the Black Guy always dies first [horror] and Indigenous peoples no longer exists [vanished trope], for instance). The literature we will read in this course will be fantastic, supernatural, and boundary-pushing--provocative explorations of culture in America. We begin by exploring oral narratives of Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) writers whose mele (chants and songs) and mo'olelo (hi/stories) both narrate Native Hawaiians' historical connection to the land and influence much indigenous prose and poetry in the islands today. From there we turn to consider the work of various non-indigenous or settler writers who are not Hawaiian by blood but whose texts still reflect a deep and meaningful connection to Hawai'i nei. Major texts to include: The Kumulipo; Lili'uokalani's Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen; The Wind Gourd of La'amaomao; Milton Murayama's All I Asking for Is My Body; R. Zamora Linmark's Rolling the R's; Alani Apio's play, Kamau; and selections of poetry, short fiction, and essays by Darrell Lum, Cathy Song, Juliet Kono Lee, Lois-Ann Yamanaka, Gary Pak, Lisa Linn Kanae, and Joe Balaz. Prerequisite: ENG 100, or equivalent, with a C or better. Rec. Prep: Acceptance into the Leeward CC Honors Program. Students must check their UH email for course correspondence from their instructor before the first day of instruction.
